Water & Sanitation

Forty-eight percent of those in Togo do not have access to an improved water source such as household connections, public standpipes, boreholes, protected dug wells and/or springs or rainwater collection. As of now only 35% have regular access to clean water. In order to improve access to such water sources in these Togolese rural villages, BCB intends to help fund the building of solar powered pumps within reasonable kilometers of all village homes so that each person can have 20 liters of water per day.

On the way to BCB village of Koussougba, BCB team meet women who have walked over 3 miles to collect contaminated water from this water hole. This video speaks for itself. Speaking the local language of Ewe, this villager is asking BCB to please, please build a pump in the area. She also states that cows had just finish drinking from the same source, but that she had no choice, she needs water!

BCB plans to execute the WASH ("water sanitation and hygiene") program in two village partnerships with Madjamakou and Koussougba in the Atakpame region of Togo. With this program and an integrated approach, we can increase rural access to clean water as well as use the Technology of Participation (ToPĀ®) in workshops and grassroots activities to introduce simple technologies of sanitation and hygiene in village communities that will reduce some of the causes of water-borne diseases.
